Shot in a Holga style, and with an X-Files level of darkness, Tim Burton’s version of the famous mass-murder musical is everything I could hope it would be. Good casting is one of the secrets of Burton’s success, but even amongst a top cast Johnny Depp’s performance is stunning. His progress from maudlin to madness is terrifying, with the final 20 minutes so intense that Bonham Carter’s wardrobe stopped being distracting, and I forgot to notice whether people were singing or talking.
Mainly, people were dying, in many pints of blood. It’s an intense film, but a wonderful one.

If you like a mixture of gothic melodrama, theatrical music and lots-and-lots of blood, then I think you’ll be most impressed!
