OK, Michel Gondry, this was the deal: make another dull, narcoleptic movie like The Science of Sleep, and I’d never go to see another film you’d written yourself. Not ever. After the utter brilliance of Eternal Sunshine, the crushing disappointment of Sleep was nearly fatal.
But it’s OK. Be Kind Rewind is funny, imaginative and clever, with typical Gondry whimsy – but doesn’t suffer from the previous film’s massive pacing problems. And this time around, the director is well served by great casting – interesting actors making Gondry’s eccentric ideas plausible and interesting.
Maybe not great, but much better.
